Preserving the heritage of wine-producing civilisations

The purpose of La Cité du Vin is to present the history of the heritage of wine throughout the ages and to make this history accessible by sharing it with the general public through a multitude of specially designed learning spaces. La Cité du Vin offers its visitors an experience that is spectacular, digital, interactive, multisensory and immersive all at once.

In addition to their family estates in the Bordeaux region and abroad, managed by the Compagnie Vinicole Baron Edmond de Rothschild, Baron Benjamin and Baroness Ariane de Rothschild are actively committed to protecting and promoting the heritage of the wine-producing world.

A bold architectural concept

The aim of this "Bordeaux Guggenheim" – neither a museum nor a theme park – is to become a flagship centre and a gateway to the vineyards of Bordeaux. It is a space dedicated to knowledge and culture, but it is also a fun, sensory-oriented and interactive place.

Designed by Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazieres, the architecture of the building is inspired by symbols: gnarled vine stock, a decanter, wine swirling in a glass, eddies on the Garonne, etc. Every detail evokes the essence of wine and its liquid nature. Comprising more than 13,350 m2 and 10 floors, and rising to a height of 55 metres, La Cité du Vin invites us on a journey.
