The Commonwealth of The Bahamas

Our story

Commonwealth Nation

The Commonwealth of The Bahamas is an archipelago made up of roughly 700 islands scattered over an area of 100,000 square miles. It extends over 500 miles into the Atlantic Ocean from its westernmost point, some 50 miles off the south-eastern coast of Florida. The capital city of The Bahamas is Nassau, situated on the Island of New Providence.

The Bahamas has been an independent country since 1973. It is a member of the United Nations and has observer status at the World Trade Organization. It assumes responsibility for administering its own economic and political affairs. Its political institutions are modeled on Britain's bicameral form of legislature.

The executive branch of government (the Cabinet) is formed by the Prime Minister and his ministers chosen from the governing political party. The legal system also follows the British pattern and is independent from the political process, creating a favourable atmosphere for international business. Legislation exists which makes it an offence to divulge information obtained from or in connection with clients’ dealings in The Bahamas. In addition, The Bahamas has no income, inheritance, capital gains or corporate tax. Government revenues are raised mainly through customs.

Financial centre

Structured banking

The Bahamas has been providing banking and trust services to the international financial community since the 1930s. Besides the neutral fiscal environment, The Bahamas' legal framework, rooted in English tradition, is well suited to establishing trusts, foundations and offshore companies and to administering investment funds. Banking is the second-largest industry, and today the country is home to numerous branches of the world's most prestigious banks. This success reflects The Bahamas' status as one of the world's most thriving financial centres. The Bahamas is also compliant with all the relevant international standards established by various inter-governmental groups.
