The Commonwealth of The Bahamas is an archipelago made up of roughly 700 islands scattered over an area of 100,000 square miles. It extends over 500 miles into the Atlantic Ocean from its westernmost point, some 50 miles off the south-eastern coast of Florida. The capital city of The Bahamas is Nassau, situated on the Island of New Providence.
The Bahamas has been an independent country since 1973. It is a member of the United Nations and has observer status at the World Trade Organization. It assumes responsibility for administering its own economic and political affairs. Its political institutions are modeled on Britain's bicameral form of legislature.
