Highlights of the week

Economist insights: US core inflation slowed in October and in Japan, GDP contracted in the third quarter

United States :

  • Supported by energy prices, overall inflation came in at 2.5% in October
    • Conversely, the rise in core prices confirmed that inflationary pressures remain limited

Japan :

    • Contraction in GDP in Q3 due to the natural disasters that hit the country
    • Recovery expected in Q4

Focus Portugal: A fall in the public deficit despite anti-austerity spending

  • Portugal, which has benefited from the economic recovery and favourable financing conditions, has succeeded in raising government spending while improving its public finances
  • Structural reforms, better export competitiveness, lower fiscal pressure on companies and lower interest rates have led to a fall in the budget deficit
  • A further deceleration in economic activity should limit the room for manoeuvre in reducing the already high level of debt in the public and private sectors
