A partnership between two leading names sharing values of determination and creativity
In 2003, Edmond de Rothschild Heritage and Vega Sicilia decided to bring together their businesses’ shared values of determination, elegance, and creativity to build a winery from the ground up. Since 2003, they have invested €22 million in Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia. The project has taken 15 years, in which they have built an ultra-modern environment to control each detail of the winemaking process.
Creating a successful new wine from scratch is down to having tenacity and dedication. Fifteen years ago, not many people considered such long term investments, especially in a time of economic uncertainty. New standards of excellence in Rioja
The partnership sought to make a mark on Rioja with new methods that would inspire future generations of winemakers. It all started with the careful and patient selection of the land, which took the longest and cost the most. The businesses acquired 120 hectares of vineyard over the last 13 years through 70 different discreet purchase transactions in order to keep the project under wraps.
The wines are a result of a meticulous selection process within each of the 130 vineyards. They are produced in the Bordeaux style – with two blends. Each grape is treated identically until each lot is tasted and allocated for ageing in one of the two blends: Macán and Macán Clásico.
Combining the best of innovation with the best of tradition
The combination of the latest technical advances and the legacy of traditional techniques are key to the distinct quality of the Mácan wines. In the vineyard, the winemaking team use traditional practices to keep the grapes in the best conditions, by favouring natural cultivation techniques and manual work.
The innovative features of the winery allow winemakers to reach a high level of care, from the transport of the clusters to the choice of materials and the control of temperatures during the entire process. The modern architecture contributes to the preservation of the grapes: perfectly integrated into the landscape, the sloping building allows the winemaking team to make use of gravity to handle the grapes while preserving their integrity.
After the first harvest of Mácan in 2009, around 69,000 bottles were released, and stocks ran out in weeks. The new bodega will take the production to the next level, with even higher quality standards. In the new facilities, the maximum production level has been set to 320,000 bottles.

Mácan reflects the strategy Ariane de Rothschild implemented within the financial and non-financial activities of Edmond de Rothschild Group: pushing the limits of innovation, combining performance and long-term investment and reinventing the model of traditional businesses.
The Baroness has always considered the non-financial activities of her family as an entrepreneurial “lab” for the Group. That’s why she has managed to turn them into thriving activities: since December 2016, the wineries, hotels, restaurants and farm operate under a single entity called Edmond de Rothschild Heritage, representative of a new international and consistent strategy.
