The Trump presidency: implications for the climate

News - 2/23/2017

With Donald Trump winning the election, and the Republicans gaining control of the Senate and of the Chamber of Representatives, it seems that fossil energies have won over renewable energies - in conflict with the position of the Obama Administration in recent years (2014-2016).

Trump makes no attempt to conceal his scepticism on climate change. Let us not forget that climate sceptics have all but disappeared in Europe. They remain active in the United States, where lobbies have generously funded this mind-set, particularly during the 2000 decade.

The decisions taken by the Trump administration should not have a major impact on the European Union’s climate policy before 2020. It is worth noting  that the upcoming Brexit will have a stronger effect on the main pillars of European climate policy.
